What AI Agents Can Actually Do for a Business
Leave the hype aside. These are the jobs AI agents do reliably today, the ones they still get wrong, and how to set one up so it helps rather than embarrasses you.

An AI agent is software that reads a request in normal language, decides what to do, and uses tools to do it: looking up a price, checking stock, booking a slot, updating a record. The difference from a basic chatbot is that last part. An agent acts on your systems, within limits you set.
Jobs agents do well today
- Answering product and policy questions from your own catalogue, price list and FAQs, at any hour.
- Qualifying leads: asking budget, location and timeline, then routing the lead to the right salesperson.
- Booking and rescheduling appointments against a real calendar.
- Checking order and payment status for a customer who gives their phone number.
- Drafting quotations, product descriptions and follow-up messages for staff to approve.
- Summarising long chats, tickets or reports into a few lines for a manager.
These tasks share a pattern: the information exists in your systems, and the work is finding it and phrasing it well.
Jobs to keep a person on
- Final pricing on negotiated or large orders.
- Complaints where the customer is upset.
- Anything involving medical, legal or financial advice.
- Decisions that commit money, such as refunds above a set amount.
A good agent recognises these and hands over, with the conversation history attached, so the customer does not repeat themselves.
What makes an agent reliable
Grounding. The agent answers from your data, not from general knowledge. If a product is not in the catalogue, it says so.
Narrow tools. Give the agent specific actions ("check stock for SKU", "create booking") rather than open access to your database.
Logging. Every conversation is stored against the customer record, so you can review what was said and improve the instructions.
A clear exit. Customers can always reach a person, and staff can take over a live chat.
Where agents live
Most of our clients start on the website, then add WhatsApp, because that is where Kenyan customers already are. The same agent can serve both, sharing one set of instructions and one CRM.
A realistic first project
Pick one high-volume conversation, such as "Do you have this in stock and how much is it?", and automate it end to end. Measure how many chats it resolves without a person. Expand from there.
